Indonesia Strengthens Global Sports Security at UNOCT Conference in New York

Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the GGN Foundation attended an international conference organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) at the UN Headquarters in New York on March 5.
The conference, themed "Securing the Legacy: Debriefing from Paris 2024 for Future Sporting Events," also marked the fifth anniversary of the Global Sports Programme managed by UNOCT.
Indonesia’s participation in this event reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the security of global sporting events while also leveraging sports as a means to prevent extremism.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo, opened the event by highlighting Indonesia’s success in hosting major international sporting competitions, including the 2018 Asian Games, the 2023 Basketball World Cup, the MotoGP Mandalika, and the 2023 U-17 World Cup.
He also took the opportunity to introduce pencak silat as a cultural heritage with strategic value in reinforcing social resilience.
Then, Ratu Tisha Destria, founder of the GGN Foundation and Expert Staff to the Minister for Diaspora and Diplomacy, delivered a presentation emphasizing the significant impact of sports on Indonesia’s economy, diplomacy, and security.

She also discussed the unusyal geographical challenges of hosting international events in an archipelagic nation and stressed the need for further research in cybersecurity for sporting events.
Additionally, she underscored the importance of close collaboration with UNOCT in advancing global sports security.
During the conference, the Indonesian delegation met with UNOCT Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov, who expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s active role and hoped for continued partnership.
Two strategic steps were agreed upon during the meeting. First, Indonesia will host a sports security conference in October 2025.
Second, a UNOCT representative will be stationed in Jakarta to strengthen cooperation.
"GGN Foundation believes that sports are not just about competition but also a tool for fostering global peace and security," said Destria in an official press release.
"We were excited to collaborate with UNOCT to enhance sports event security programs in Indonesia. The upcoming coaches' conference and the placement of a UNOCT representative in Jakarta mark a promising start in realizing this initiative," she concluded.
