Jakarta, VIVA –The Cikarang Correctional Facility (Lapas Cikarang) has been submerged due to heavy rainfall that has hit Jakarta and its surrounding areas over the past two days.
As a result, a total of 1,451 inmates and other residents have been affected by the flooding.
The Director General of Corrections at the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Mashudi, immediately inspected the flood-affected prison.
"First, we want to ensure their safety, as well as maintain their access to food and medical care if anyone falls ill. Although the situation is deeply concerning due to the flooding and the necessary power outage for safety reasons, security, services, and care for the inmates must continue to operate as effectively as possible," Mashudi stated on Wednesday (March 5).
Mashudi urged the head of Lapas Cikarang and his team to coordinate and collaborate with various agencies to support the relief and recovery efforts following the flood.

This includes working with PLN and BMKG, as well as partnering with the Cikarang Police Department to temporarily relocate some of the inmates.
"The inmates have been moved to higher ground. As of now, the situation remains under control and manageable. We ask for everyone's prayers so that this disaster can be resolved quickly," Mashudi remarked.
Meanwhile, female inmates have been temporarily transferred to the Bandung Women's Correctional Facility.
As Lapas Cikarang remains submerged, prison staff have been working to drain the floodwaters.
They have been pumping water out of the facility and directing it to lower-lying areas outside the prison, assisted by equipment provided by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), which also supplied rubber boats.
"We're continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating with various stakeholders to manage the flooding at Lapas Cikarang," he concluded.
