Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian Ministry of Health has emphasized that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) detected in China is not a virus to be overly concerned about, as it has been present in Indonesia for a long time and is not considered a deadly disease.

Nevertheless, the public is encouraged to maintain their health by taking preventive measures, such as getting adequate rest.

"Is HMPV present in Indonesia? Yes, it has been in Indonesia for a long time. If you check, is it still here? Yes, it is. Perhaps some of you here, if you are coughing, might have it too," said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin on Monday (Jan 6).

The minister explained that HMPV is an old virus discovered in 2001 and has been circulating globally since then.

However, there have been no significant outbreaks caused by this virus. Minister Sadikin also clarified that reports of a surge in HMPV cases in China are untrue.

"Secondly, is HMPV surging in China in 2024? That is also not true. The Chinese government has refuted this, and so has the World Health Organization (WHO). So, that news is a hoax, friends," Minister Sadikin stated.

He further explained that the virus spreading in China is not HMPV but H1N1, a common influenza virus. He stated that HMPV ranks third in prevalence in China.

"Every winter, there is an increase in H1N1 cases in countries with four seasons, including China," he said.

Minister Sadikin reminded the public that anyone can catch the flu. However, if a person's immune system is in good condition, the body can easily fight off the virus.

He added that people should rest, exercise adequately, and take a break if they are experiencing symptoms such as coughing and a runny nose.

"If your neighbor has a cold, coughs, or sneezes, keep your distance from them. Follow the three M's: maintaining distance, washing hands, and wearing a mask," he concluded.
