Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has officially announced the termination of Shin Tae-yong's tenure as the head coach of the Indonesian national football team.
"We express our gratitude for Shin Tae-yong's contributions. However, the dynamics of the national team require special attention," said PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir on Monday (Jan 6).
According to Thohir, the association needs a leader who can implement strategies that align with collective goals.
"Unfortunately, the collaboration has come to an end. The necessary administrative processes will be handled," he stated.
With this decision, the five-year partnership between Shin Tae-yong and the Indonesian national team has officially concluded.
Erick Thohir assured that PSSI had carefully considered the decision. There is still a two-month window to prepare for the next match in the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Australia on March 20.
"Before facing China, there was significant internal tension. But after careful calculations, we realized the timing back then was too close to the next match. It's the best time, as we now have two and a half months to prepare," Thohir explained.
Shin Tae-yong began managing the Indonesian national team in 2019. Under his leadership, Indonesia achieved historic milestones, including advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2023 Asian Cup and reaching the third round of the 2026 World Cup Asian Qualifiers for the first time ever.
As the head coach of the senior national team, Shin Tae-yong oversaw 57 competitive matches. According to Transfermarkt data, the Indonesian squad won 26 of those games under his guidance.
