The inclusion of President Prabowo in the category of influential leaders for 2025 is attributed to his swift and decisive actions in taking on an international role.

One example is his diplomatic visits to several countries, including trips to China and the United States, as well as his attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Peru in November 2024.

All these visits were made within a month of Prabowo being inaugurated as Indonesia’s President on October 20, 2024.

"Prabowo's overseas visits have been driven more by economic motives than geopolitical or personal agendas," The Straits Times stated.

"The core of his presidential vision is achieving an 8 percent GDP growth rate, up from the current 5 percent level," it added.

Achieving this vision largely depends on attracting investors, particularly in the infrastructure sector, to enhance connectivity and productivity across Indonesia.

On the international stage, President Prabowo advocates for Indonesia to assert itself more strongly in multilateral forums. One example is the government’s expressed desire for Indonesia to join BRICS.

Additionally, The Straits Times highlighted how Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, views Prabowo as an “ally.”

"Prabowo is expected to provide strong support for Malaysia’s achievements within ASEAN," it wrote.

This support facilitates cross-border investments, including supply chain connectivity and sustainable development. Such initiatives align with Prabowo’s administration's emphasis on “growth-oriented development,” The Straits Times explained.

On the other hand, The Straits Times also shed light on Prabowo’s foreign policy approach, which seeks to strengthen Indonesia’s relations with Russia and China.

This strategy has sparked debates over whether it aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategic interests.

"Observers will closely monitor Prabowo’s ability to navigate global balances while managing domestic criticism of his international decisions," The Straits Times remarked.

Here’s the list of the 10 World Leaders to Watch in 2025 according to The Straits Times:

• Donald Trump, United States

• Xi Jinping, China

• Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel

• Vladimir Putin, Russia

• Kim Jong Un, North Korea

• Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia

• Narendra Modi, India

• Shigeru Ishiba, Japan

• Anthony Albanese, Australia

• Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia
