Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics is continuously striving to bridge the digital divide by strengthening and expanding telecommunication networks evenly to advance digitalization.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, conveyed that although there are still challenges related to the quality of telecommunication networks in certain regions, nearly 97 percent of residential areas are now connected to telecommunication networks.
“Internet penetration among the public has reached 80 percent, according to the latest APJII 2024 data, which shows 79.5 percent. However, we still have a problem called the digital divide, where not all areas have good quality telecommunication services,” Patria said on Friday (Jan 3).
He expressed optimism that this challenge can be overcome through signal strengthening programs and network capacity enhancements.
According to him, the government will push for internet speeds in Indonesia to reach 100 Mbps (megabits per second), up from the previous 27 Mbps.
"So, areas with weak frequencies or signals will be enhanced. We're aiming for a speed of 100 Mbps for the internet because currently, the average in Indonesia is 27 Mbps. Our ranking in ASEAN is third from the bottom, along with Timor-Leste and Laos," Patria explained.
Improving the quality of connectivity is necessary for wider adoption of the latest technologies, such as 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT).
He also explained that the adoption of IoT will be closely related to artificial intelligence (AI), which is useful for detecting containers or ships entering ports.
He said that the digitalization of various sectors will now accelerate when supported by adequate telecommunication infrastructure.
Patria emphasized that meaningful connectivity will have a broad impact on social and economic aspects.
“This is a significant challenge that will be our main program," he concluded.
