Jakarta, VIVA – An Indonesian expert, Yurdi Yasmi has been appointed as the Director of the Plant Production and Protection Division at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 1 (FAO).
He has a proven track record of leadership at FAO, having previously served as Deputy Regional Representative for Africa and Representative for Ghana.
In his new role, he will lead FAO's support to Member Nations in transitioning towards sustainable plant production systems and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As outlined in an FAO press release on Friday, December 20, along with its partners, the division's six teams work to advance sustainable plant production and protection while addressing challenges facing agri-food systems, such as climate change, conflicts, and economic factors.
"I am delighted to take on this new role as Director of the Plant Production and Protection Division and am fully aware of the scale of the work we need to accomplish," Yasmi stated.
He added, "We promote sustainable plant production and protection by producing more with less to increase the availability of healthy food for domestic consumption, commercial export, food aid, or emergency food reserves on a consistent basis."
As known, FAO facilitates the use of innovative technologies, science-based management practices, and evidence-based policies that enhance the efficiency, inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability of plant production systems.
Yasmi has held senior positions at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), and the Center for People and Forests (RECOFTC).
He has led agriculture, environment, and forestry projects in more than 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Fiji, Ghana, Myanmar, Samoa, Timor-Leste, Zimbabwe, and many more.
Yasmi holds a PhD and a Master's degree (with honors) from Wageningen University and a Bachelor of Science from Bogor Agricultural University (IPB).Â
