Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian government has confirmed that Mary Jane Veloso remains a convicted prisoner upon her arrival in the Philippines.
Mary Jane, a death row inmate in a drug-related case, is among the prisoners transferred or repatriated to their home country.
Deputy Coordinator for Immigration and Correctional Affairs at the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, stated that Mary Jane’s transfer from Indonesia to the Philippines does not change her status as a prisoner.
"Mary Jane remains a prisoner, and in the Philippines, she will be treated the same way as in Indonesia," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday (Dec 17).
Upon her arrival at Manila Airport, Mary Jane will undergo further legal processes and will be placed back in prison.
"Once she arrives in the Philippines, Mary Jane will be imprisoned, and the legal proceedings will follow the agreement and the laws of the Philippines. The Philippine government will later determine her subsequent punishment," he explained.
He further emphasized that during the repatriation process, both parties reaffirmed their respect for each other's legal systems.
"This agreement does not diminish Indonesia's legal sovereignty, including the Indonesian court's ruling in Mary Jane Veloso’s case. Meanwhile, the Philippine government has the authority to grant clemency, remission, or amnesty under the applicable laws in their country," Mataram concluded.
