Bakrie: Trump's High Import Tariffs Unavoidable

Jakarta, VIVA – The United States (US) President-elect, Donald Trump, is set to implement a policy on high import tariffs against several countries.

Regarding of the policy, the Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Anindya Novyan Bakrie, stated that the policy cannot be avoided as it represents a firm commitment by Donald Trump since his campaign days.

"It seems that these high tariffs are unavoidable, as they are part of President Trump's policy," Bakrie said in Jakarta on Monday (December 9).

According to Bakrie, Indonesia is currently striving to create opportunities for opening new markets through trade agreements with several countries, including Canada, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Australia, and Japan.

"However, we're seeking opportunities. For instance, there has been cooperation with Canada, the UAE, Japan, and also Australia," he stated.

Furthermore, reflecting on a 2.5-week experience accompanying President Prabowo Subianto on his working visits to several countries recently, Bakrie noted that cooperation among Global South nations is equally important.

"Collaboration between Global South nations, such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, and countries in the Middle East, is crucial," he remarked.

On the other hand, Bakrie also expressed hope that the trade agreement between Indonesia and the European Union (IEU-CEPA) could be finalized and agreed upon by both parties, enabling its immediate implementation.

The economic benefits for both parties, especially for Indonesia, are substantial if the trade agreement between Indonesia and the European Union is successfully realized, Bakrie acknowledged.
