Jakarta, VIVA – The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, announced that Indonesia has started exporting precursors, one of the raw materials for electric vehicle (EV) battery to the United States (US) in November 2024.
These nickel-based battery materials will be used for the production of Tesla electric cars.
"This month, we have started exporting precursors directly to America, for Tesla products," Minister Lahadalia stated in Jakarta, on Monday (Nov 25).
He stated that the government continues to promote downstream processing for mining commodities. According to him, Indonesia's nickel industry development is currently on the right track.
However, the level of downstream processing for nickel commodities needs to be further enhanced to produce high-value end products.
The government is also building an electric vehicle battery ecosystem, including a factory with a 10-gigawatt capacity that is already operational in Karawang, West Java.
"We are pushing nickel forward. In my opinion, nickel is already on the right track, but we need to move beyond creating value in NPI (nickel pig iron). We must push for deeper downstream processing that produces finished goods," the minister remarked.
Furthermore, he stated that Indonesia is committed to becoming one of the countries with an integrated EV battery ecosystem, from upstream to downstream.
This ecosystem includes mining, smelters, high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) facilities, precursor and cathode production, battery cells, and recycling. According to him, progress on developing this ecosystem has currently reached around 70-80 percent.
"This will be one of the key attractions for investors to invest in Indonesia," he concluded.
