Jakarta, VIVA - The Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency has called on local governments across Indonesia to urgently improve the management of landfill sites (TPA).
This directive specifically targets landfill sites that continue to use open dumping systems, which are seen as harmful to the environment.
The Director of Waste Management at the Ministry of Environment, Novrizal Tahar, revealed that 54.4 percent of landfills in Indonesia still operate with open dumping systems.
This system has the potential to pollute surrounding soil, air, and water sources, as well as create foul odors and health risks for nearby residents.
“The open dumping system at landfill sites is prohibited under Law No. 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management,” Tahar said on Tuesday (Nov 12).
Tahar further explained that the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency has issued 306 warning letters to regional heads still using open dumping, urging them to promptly improve landfill management.
Currently, there are 60 landfill sites and illegal dumping locations under surveillance, with some cases already being legally processed.
“This action may lead to legal sanctions for those who fail to comply with the regulations,” he emphasized.
Tahar added that any local government failing to meet its obligations will face enforcement actions according to existing laws. He also highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration and public participation to support sustainable waste management.
Additionally, the Ministry encourages the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies, such as recycling and waste-to-energy systems.
This initiative aims to establish a more integrated and sustainable waste management system, aligning with Indonesia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (ENDC).
“Local governments are expected to respond promptly by developing concrete programs to reform the waste management sector, especially at landfill sites,” he concluded.
