Indonesia Prepares Gen Z for a Leading Role in 2045 Demographic Dividend

Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesia is expected to reach the peak of its demographic dividend by 2045, with Generation Z (Gen Z) projected to become the majority of the productive workforce.
This demographic shift positions Gen Z as a vital force in driving the nation's progress. In response, the government and society are collaborating to empower Gen Z with the skills and adaptability needed to lead Indonesia’s future.
Deputy Minister Dzulfikar Ahmadi Tawalla, representing the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, emphasized the shared responsibility of all societal sectors in preparing Gen Z to face future challenges.
It is our collective duty to be present in preparing the youth of Indonesia for the future,” he said during the Merdeka Barat 9 (FMB9) Dialogue Forum, titled Youth Welcoming a Golden Indonesia, on October 28.
He underscored the importance of multi-sector collaboration, as outlined in a Presidential Regulation on cross-sectoral coordination in youth services, which includes partnerships across education, healthcare, employment, and economic empowerment.
Statistics from Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statistics reveal that youth now comprise roughly 62% of the population, positioning them as a potential powerhouse for driving national advancement.
However, Deputy Minister Dzulfikar noted that numbers alone are insufficient; Gen Z must be equipped with core competencies, relevant knowledge, essential skills, and robust networking capabilities.
The government has made significant efforts to prepare Gen Z, including collaboration with countries like South Korea, Japan, and Germany through government-to-government (G2G) programs.
These initiatives provide skill and language training for prospective migrant workers, offering Gen Z global exposure and valuable work experience.
“These programs not only prepare Gen Z for work abroad but also provide them with valuable global experiences,” Dzulfikar explained, underscoring that holistic development must go beyond formal education.
Additionally, Imam Gunawan, a senior policy analyst at the Youth and Sports Ministry, stressed the importance of mental health and social skills, alongside economic readiness.
“The Youth Law, Number 40 of 2009, serves as the basis for government policies in youth development, encompassing entrepreneurship training, vocational education, and social participation,” he said, noting that these programs are crucial for building Gen Z’s resilience and adaptability.
