According to KAI's CEO, Didiek Hartantyo, the company has procured 612 new train units, set to be delivered gradually until 2026.

“We have ordered 612 train units, and nearly all of them are economy class,” Hartantyo said at Pasar Senen Station, Jakarta, on Sunday (Oct 13).

The decision to predominantly purchase economy-class trains stems from the fact that passengers primarily book economy seats.

Hartantyo mentioned that Indonesia currently has around 2,000 trains, most of which are over 30 years old.

The New Generation trains are part of the 612 Stainless Steel New Generation units set to be launched between 2023 and 2026 by INKA.

The introduction of executive and economy-class Stainless Steel New Generation trains aims to enhance KAI's services for customers, with gradual implementation across various train routes.

One of the key features of these trains is the automatic electric doors at the entrances and between carriages, which make it easier for passengers to operate while reducing noise when opened or closed.

Additionally, each train is equipped with a Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), showing details about nearby stations, speed, and cabin temperature.

This system is designed to improve the travel experience by providing essential information throughout the journey.

The windows on the Stainless Steel New Generation trains have been upgraded to tempered double glass, replacing the previous tempered glass.

It enhances safety, reduces excessive heat and UV rays, and also helps in noise reduction.

To accommodate passengers’ charging needs, KAI has added USB charger ports to every seat, in addition to the existing wall outlets, allowing passengers to charge their phones, laptops, and smartwatches during their trip.

Moreover, the train’s toilets have been upgraded with a lower faucet for foot washing. In the women's restroom, KAI has added a folding table for changing baby diapers.

The dining car in the New Generation trains has also been updated, featuring premium interiors with wood accents and more comfortable dining chairs. The same PIDS system is also available in the dining car.
