Malaysia, China Dominate Rising Foreign Tourism to Indonesia in August 2024

Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesia recorded an increase in international tourist arrivals in August 2024, with a total of 1,339,946 visits. This figure represents a 2.23 percent rise on a monthly basis and an 18.30 percent increase year-on-year.
Acting Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated that 1,177,652 tourists entered through the main entry points, while 162,294 entered through border crossings.
"Thus, the total number of international tourist visits was 1,339,946, which is an increase of 2.23 percent month-on-month, and an increase of 18.30 percent year-on-year," Widyasanti said at the BPS office in Jakarta, on Tuesday (Oct 1).
Widyasanti further explained that cumulatively, from January to August 2024, the total number of international tourist arrivals reached 9,092,856, which is an increase of 20.38 percent compared to the same period in 2023.
"The total number of international tourist visits up until August 2024 is the highest since 2020. However, when compared to the same period before the pandemic, it is still relatively lower," she stated.
Widyasanti mentioned that the highest number of international tourists came from Malaysia, Australia, and China.
As noted, tourist arrivals from Malaysia increased by 6.21 percent month-on-month and 7.99 percent year-on-year.
"International tourist arrivals from Malaysia increased by 6.21 percent on a monthly basis and by 7.99 percent year-on-year," she remarked.
Additionally, most Chinese tourists entered through Soekarno-Hatta Airport, while the majority of Australian tourists entered through I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali.
"In terms of the average length of stay in August 2024, including border crossers, international tourists spent around 8.27 nights in Indonesia," she concluded.
