Indonesia, Japan Strengthen Ties with Four Collaborative Agendas

Tokyo, VIVA – During his working visit to Japan, the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, held a bilateral meeting with Japan's Minister of Defense, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, Tetsuo Saito, on Thursday (Sept 26).

In this meeting, Minister Hadimuljono discussed four infrastructure cooperation agendas between Indonesia and Japan.

First, the minister elaborated on the follow-up to the 10th World Water Forum, which was held in Bali, Indonesia, in May 2024.

Minister Hadimuljono also expressed his gratitude for the full support of the Japanese government in the implementation of the 10th World Water Forum.

“One of the outcomes is that the Indonesian government has proposed World Lake Day, selected on August 27 to commemorate the World Lake Conference held in 1984. In Japan, we will also study sustainable lake management and conservation patterns by visiting Lake Biwa,” he explained.

Second, Minister Hadimuljono stated that he had met with the Secretary-General of the Japan Water Forum, Toshiro Takemura, to discuss preparations for the 5th Asia Pacific Water Summit (APWS) in 2027.

For the 5th APWS, Indonesia has once again been trusted to host the event and is ready to collaborate with the Japanese government.

Minister Hadimuljono, on behalf of the Indonesian government, has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) together with the Japan Water Forum.

“I believe that the 5th APWS will be a key platform to follow up on the outcomes of the 10th World Water Forum. Therefore, I will consolidate and follow up on the LoI to detail it into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will include themes, sub-themes, stages, timelines, and a joint organizing committee starting in early 2025,” he stated.

Additionally, the minister expressed his gratitude for Japan's support in establishing the Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience through JICA.

Minister Ensures IKN Development on Track for Indonesian Independence Day

The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, through the Director General of Water Resources Bob Arthur Lombogia, has also signed an MoU with the Sabo Technical Center (STC) along with the JICA representative in Indonesia during the 10th World Water Forum.

This cooperation is aimed at strengthening the STC to become a Sabo Technology Training Center and be part of the Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience, which can benefit countries in the Asia-Pacific and Africa.

As the fourth agendas, the minister requested expert support for quality assurance in the construction of the new capital city, Nusantara (IKN).

According to Minister Hadimuljono, this will greatly assist the Indonesian government in ensuring that the development of IKN as a city meets high-quality standards.
