Samarinda, VIVA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged the public to beware when using social media.
The head of state recognizes that in this digital era, it has become easier for people to access information.
Therefore, it's crucial to thoroughly filter whether the information obtained is true or not.
Initially, the president stated that conventional media, which have editorial teams, are now being increasingly pressured by the rapid growth of social media and online media.
Everyone can become a journalist and spread information quickly.
"In today's digital era, our society can easily access information. Conventional media with editorial boards are being pushed aside, while social media and online media dominate, and anyone can become a journalist—citizen journalism—without the oversight of an editorial board," President Jokowi remarked while opening the 30th MTQ held in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Sunday (Sept 8).
Then he urged the public to be more cautious when receiving information from social media.
People need to double-check the accuracy of the information they receive through social media and online platforms.
"Therefore, every social media news reader must be able to act as their own editor, capable of filtering which news is good and which is not, and must check which is true and which is fake news," the president concluded.
