History of the Proclamation of Independence

Indonesia's long journey toward independence culminated on August 17, 1945, a moment when the nation, under the leadership of Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta, declared its freedom from Japanese occupation.

The proclamation text, drafted at the home of Admiral Maeda after the Rengasdengklok incident, stands as a testament to the Indonesian people's determination to establish an independent nation.

A group of young activists, led by Soekarni, Wikana, Aidit, and Chaerul Saleh, urged the two leaders to promptly declare the independence of the Republic of Indonesia from the Japanese government, which was in control at the time.

After the Rengasdengklok abduction incident, Soekarno and Hatta were escorted back to Jakarta. They stayed at Admiral Maeda’s residence, who assured their safety, along with that of others involved.

Soekarno, Hatta, and Maeda met with Major General Nishimura to discuss the Proclamation of Independence, but Nishimura forbade Soekarno and Hatta from holding a PPKI (Indonesian Independence Prepatory Committee) meeting regarding independence.

Sayuti Melik later typed the proclamation text, which was signed by Soekarno and Hatta. The drafting process was witnessed by B.M. Diah, Miyoshi, Sudiro, and Sukarni. The text itself was authored by Soekarno, Hatta, and Ahmad Soebardjo.
