Jakarta, VIVA – The upcoming National Sports Week, PON XXI 2024, hosted by Aceh and North Sumatra, promises to be more than just a sporting event; it aims to strengthen national unity and promote equitable sports development across Indonesia.
Deputy for Sports Achievement Improvement at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Surono, highlighted the unifying power of sports, stating, "Historically, sports have the power to unite people beyond ethnic, religious, and racial boundaries."
Speaking at the Merdeka Barat 9 Forum Dialogue, themed 'PON XXI Aceh-North Sumatra 2024: A Moment for Unity in Progress' on Monday, July 29th, Surono emphasized PON's role in fostering camaraderie among citizens.
He noted that the event showcases high sportsmanship from athletes nationwide, demonstrating how sports can act as a unifying force.
PON XXI 2024 marks a significant milestone as it is the first time two provinces, Aceh and North Sumatra, jointly host the event. Surono described this as "an innovation in national sports governance," which not only reflects the spirit of unity but also accelerates regional sports development.
Ahmad Saefudin, Deputy Secretary General of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI), mentioned that hosting PON across two provinces allows for better infrastructure sharing and balanced athlete training.
"By dividing the hosting responsibilities, both provinces can support each other in providing infrastructure, venues, and other facilities," he explained.
Agus Fatoni, Chair of the PON XXI Organizing Committee and Acting Governor of North Sumatra, added that the event is expected to boost the local economy by attracting visitors and promoting local small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
"PON presents a significant opportunity for economic growth and showcases the potential of North Sumatra to the world," he concluded.
