Jakarta – Drinking coffee for weight loss is a relatively new diet plan that is rapidly gaining popularity due to its potential benefits in boosting metabolism, increasing energy levels, and suppressing appetite.
Coffee contains bioactive compounds such as chlorogenic acid and polyphenols. These compounds are linked to metabolic benefits, including improved insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
"These effects have the potential to influence weight regulation and contribute to weight loss," said exercise physiologist Dr. Colleen Gulick, as quoted by Healthline.
Furthermore, there are several ways in which drinking black coffee without sugar is highly beneficial for weight loss.
"Caffeine, the main component in coffee, is known to stimulate thermogenesis, which is the process by which the body generates heat and burns calories," she added.
Additionally, drinking coffee can suppress appetite. This is because caffeine has been shown to have appetite-suppressing properties, which can reduce overall calorie intake.
She also explained how coffee can enhance physical performance, making it a recommended drink before exercising or engaging in physical activity.
"By increasing workout capacity and intensity, regular consumption of unsweetened coffee can indirectly support weight loss efforts by boosting calorie expenditure during physical activities," Dr. Gulick explained.
Meanwhile, dietitian Michelle Saari, MSc, RD, advises consuming black coffee without any added sweeteners, such as sugar or creamer.
"People tend to fill their coffee cups with sugar, sweeteners, and rich creamers," she said.
"If you add all these to your daily coffee and drink several cups a day, you could be adding hundreds of extra calories just from a cup of coffee," she concluded.
