Indonesia's Poverty Rate Has Declined Sharply Over the Last 15 Years

Jakarta – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that in the last 15 years the poverty rate in Indonesia has declined sharply.

The number of poor people in Indonesia in March 2023 is known to be 9.36 percent, down from 15.82 percent in 2008.

"From BPS data over the past 15 years, Indonesia has made tremendous progress in reducing poverty. Where the results of the National Socio-Economic Survey last March in 2023 our poverty was 9.36 percent and extreme poverty was 1.12 percent," Minister Hartarto said in a statement on Thursday (June 20).

The Minister said that based on World Bank data in that period, Indonesia experienced middle class growth from 7 percent to 20 percent of the total population.

"Therefore, improving the quality and quantity of the middle class will certainly help accelerate economic growth and expand welfare distribution," the minister remarked.

He added, "The expansion of the middle class has considerable challenges. Therefore, an approach must be taken to improve the quality of human resources to increase the capacity of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)."

Several approaches that can be taken are first identifying programs in K / L based on criteria, namely access to income / employment, increasing human resource capacity, increasing the capacity of MSMEs and access to MSME financing,"

Based on BPS data, the percentage of poor people in March 2023 was 9.36 percent, or decreased by 0.21 points compared to September 2022.

The number of poor people in March 2023 amounted to 25.90 million people, reduced by 0.46 million people compared to September 2022 and reduced by 0.26 million people against March 2022.

Meanwhile, in 2008, aka 15 years earlier, the number of poor people in Indonesia in March 2008 amounted to 34.96 million people or 15.42 percent.
