Jakarta – The Transportation Ministry issued Ministerial Decree No. 31/2024 on the Designation of International Airport on April 2, 2024.

This decree designated 17 airports in Indonesia as international airports, from the original 34 international airports.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation, Adita Irawati said, the purpose of this determination in general is to be able to encourage the national aviation sector which had slumped during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This decision has also been discussed with relevant Ministries and Institutions under the coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment," Irawati said in s statement on Friday.

In the practice of organizing international airports in the world, several countries have also adjusted the number of international airports.

For example, India with a population of 1.42 billion only has 35 international airports. Meanwhile, the United States with a population of 399.9 million only manages 18 international airports.

"The regulation issued with the aim of protecting international flights after the pandemic, by making the airport an international hub (feeder) in its own country," she said.

Irawati added, so far most international airports only serve international flights to a few specific countries, and not long-distance flights.

"So international hubs are actually enjoyed by other countries," she informed.
