Jakarta – Cat, beloved companions to million people worldwide, are susceptible to a range of health issues that owners should be aware of.
Having a pet cat can be a fun experience, but just like humans, cats are also susceptible to various diseases. To keep your feline friend healthy and happy, it's important to recognize the diseases that often affect them.
1. Cat Flu
Cat flu is a viral infection similar to the human flu. Symptoms include a runny nose, red and watery eyes, sneezing and fever.
Cats suffering from cat flu may appear lethargic and lose their appetite. The condition can spread quickly among cats, especially in places with dense cat populations.
2. Dental and Gum Disease
Cats are also prone to dental and gum health problems. Plaque and tartar can build up on their teeth, causing problems such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. Symptoms to look out for include bad breath, red or swollen gums, and difficulty eating or chewing food.
3. Lower Respiratory Tract Disease
Lower respiratory tract diseases are common in cats, especially those living in humid or dusty environments. Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, and heavy or rattling breath sounds.
Viral or bacterial infections can be the main cause of this disease, and it can progress to pneumonia if left untreated.
4. Worms
Worm disease is a common problem in cats, especially in cats that frequently interact with other animals or that live outdoors.
Common types of worms in cats include tapeworms, roundworms and whipworms. Symptoms of worms can vary, but often include vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and a dull coat.
5. Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)
Urinary tract disease is a common problem in cats. Symptoms include frequent urination, difficulty urinating, blood in the urine, and urination behavior outside the litter box. Urinary tract disease can cause discomfort and requires immediate medical treatment.
