Jakarta – Indonesian Trade Minister, Zulkifli Hasan revealed the cause of the increase in onion prices.
The minister said that the current high price of onions is a common phenomenon due to the absence of traders selling the goods.
Minister Hasan feels confident that within a week, onion prices will gradually return to normal.
"It's just natural because there are no traders selling, that's all. In a week, it will be back to normal, those who sell will reopen," said Minister Hasan in Jakarta on Tuesday (April 23).
"It's a matter of time. During Eid al-Fitr, people don't trade, traditional markets are quiet, prices rise because there are no sellers," he added.
It's known that the price of onions in several regions has reportedly increased.
For example, in Semarang, the price of red onions reached IDR 70,000 per kilogram. A similar situation also occurred in Aceh.
Meanwhile, the price of onions at the Klender Market, East Jakarta has reached up to IDR 80,000 per kilogram.
Moreover, the Indonesian Shallot Association (ABMI) mentioned that the increase in the price of onions has even occurred nationally since H-10 of Eid al-Fitr and has reached IDR 70,000 per kilogram from the previous IDR 17,000 per kilogram.
