Global Action Needed to Protect Children from Lethal Explosive Weapons

Jakarta – The United Nations Children's Agency on Monday (April 22) highlighted the need for urgent action to prevent the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas, stating that meaningful action could halve the number of child casualties in conflicts around the world.

"Between 2018 and 2022, explosive weapons were responsible for nearly half 49.8 percent of the more than 47,500 cases of death and disability in children verified by the United Nations, in more than 24 conflict zones globally, with similar incidents occurring in densely populated areas," the UNICEF said in a statement.

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban emphasized the huge impact on children, saying children can feel the pain in all aspects of their lives.

"The evidence is undeniable that when explosive weapons are used in densely populated areas, children suffer greatly, not only physically but also in every aspect of their lives," Chaiban remarked.

Chaiban said the importance of international efforts to address this issue, particularly as countries gathered in Oslo, Norway for the first international conference to follow up on the Political Declaration on the use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas.

"This provides an important opportunity to better protect children, their families and communities from armed conflict," Chaiban informed.

Highlighting the adverse consequences beyond physical injury, Chaiban remarked the need for sustained international action. It makes every aspect of every child's life around the world feel safe and secure.

"Prevention is an important aspect to ensure all children are protected,"

Basically, all children in the world need justice with a better life without the adverse consequences that will befall them.
