Jakarta Poised to Become Global Trade Hub with New Law

Jakarta, 22 April, 2024 – Indonesia's Home Affairs Ministry believes the Jakarta Special Region Law (DKJ Law) will propel Jakarta into a leading global trade center. The law, recently approved by parliament, grants Jakarta significant autonomy in trade-related matters.
"This law empowers Jakarta to go beyond its current role as Indonesia's trade center and establish itself on the world stage," stated Suhajar Diantoro, Secretary General of the Ministry. He spoke at FMB9 forum titled "DKJ Law: The Future of Jakarta Post-Capital City,” quoted by VIVA English.
Diantoro pointed to Jakarta's impressive track record under its previous special capital region status (DKI). The city boasts a thriving trade and economic sector, contributing a substantial 17% to the nation's GDP.
Even with the transition from DKI to DKJ, Jakarta will retain its status as a special province with a well-developed trade center, thanks to the DKJ Law. This law grants Jakarta special authorities in various trade areas, including:
1. Issuing licenses and registrations for companies involved in trade
2. Overseeing export development through initiatives like national and international product promotions
3. Establishing consumer protection standards, including verification procedures, legal metrology education, and import supervision through customs
This reform empowers Jakarta to take charge of its trade future and potentially become a major international trade player.
