Bogor – An explosion hit the Indonesian national army ammunition warehouse on Saturday in Gunung Putri District, Bogor Regency, West Java.

Jakarta Military Command (Kodam Jaya) chief Maj. Gen. Mohamad Hasan said that the warehouse that caught fire contained expired ammunition.

"At around 6 p.m. there was a fire in warehouse number 6 which contained expired ammunition and returns from various units assigned throughout Military Regional Command in Jakarta. There are 160,000 types and explosives," Hasan said on Saturday night.

Hasan confirmed that so far by checking the location there had been no casualties in the fire incident.

"We've checked the location, there are no fatalities," Hasan informed.

Hasan further said that the explosion have been caused by unstable expired ammunition.

"The expired ammunition contain chemicals that can be unstable, there could have been some frictions that sparked the fire," Hasan explained.

The military also received reports that shells or projectiles might have landed in the surrounding areas and urged people not to touch the objects.

As information, firefighters and paramedics were not initially able to reach the scene.

But finally, the firefighters have managed to extinguish a blaze that levelled an ammunition warehouse.

Twenty-seven fire trucks were deployed to the location and firefighters managed to douse the blaze by 3:45 a.m. local time on Sunday.

"We can confirm the fire has been put out, but we are still conducting the cooling down process at the moment to anticipate the possibility of other fire spots,"  Mohamad Hasan concluded.
