500 Houses Damaged by Tornado in Sumedang

West Java – The tornado that happened on Wednesday (February 21), at 5:15 p.m., in the Sumedang and Bandung Regencies, damaged nearly 500 houses.

According to the investigation conducted by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the damage to houses in the Bandung Regency was greater than in Sumedang.

The Bandung BPBD is still conducting field assessments a day after the tornado struck the area.

Abdul Muhari, the Head of the Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the Bandung Regency BPBD recorded a total of 493 units of damaged houses by tornado, ranging from light to severe damage.

"The tornado caused damage to 18 factory buildings and shops in the area," Muhari said in a statement.

He further explaines that the Bandung Regency BPBD recorded 422 households or 1,359 individuals who lost their temporary shelter due to their homes being damaged, and there were also 21 people injured.

"There were no fatalities as a result of the incident,"

As for the damage in Sumedang Regency, West Java, there were 13 factory buildings and 10 houses belonging to residents that suffered damage.

"The affected residents in this regency amounted to 412 households (KK), with 12 injured individuals and 21 households (KK) or 74 individuals displaced," Muhari informed.

Various agencies, including the Indonesian National Army-Police and the Ministry of Social Affairs, are currently assisting in handling the affected residents of the natural disaster.

Battalion 330 and the Ministry of Social Affairs have set up tents for temporarily displaced residents.

"The displaced residents are from Situbuntu Village, Mangun Arga Village, Cimanggung District. Residents have also been evacuated to local mosques," he remarked.

BPBD officers from Sumedang and Bandung Regencies are also conducting debris and fallen tree clearance efforts with the assistance of Basarnas personnel, Indonesian National Army- Police, village and district officials, as well as residents.

"In addition to cleaning up the affected areas, personnel are also conducting data collection and needs assessments for the current post-disaster situation," Muhari concluded.
