Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) along with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi received the courtesy visit of Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad bin Hasan at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, on Tuesday.
Minister Marsudi conveyed that several bilateral issues were discussed during the meeting between the Malaysian Foreign Minister and President Jokowi, including matters regarding border disputes with a commitment to resolve those that remain unresolved, both on land and at sea, promptly.
"Because both leaders agreed last June to resolve them promptly," Minister Marsudi remarked.
Furthermore, they discussed Indonesian migrant workers, particularly focusing on the right to education for the children of these migrant workers.
There are already Community Learning Centers (CLCs) in Sabah and Sarawak, which are used to establish similar centers on the peninsula.
"Then, we also reminded that both leaders agreed to establish a special bilateral mechanism specifically addressing migrant worker issues. So, I emphasize the need for this special bilateral mechanism to start functioning soon," the Minister stated.
Regarding economic cooperation, there is a strong commitment to further strengthen economic ties, considering the significant trade and investment relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia, one of the largest within ASEAN countries.
"And, we also discussed how to optimize economies along the border,"
In addition to these three bilateral issues, Minister stated that President Jokowi and the Malaysian Foreign Minister also discussed ASEAN.
In 2025, Malaysia will assume the chairmanship of ASEAN, currently held by Laos. Indonesia-Laos-Malaysia currently form the troika addressing Myanmar issues.
