Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has issued Presidential Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 14 of 2024 concerning the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) activities, signed on January 30, 2024.
The considerations behind this regulation are aimed at meeting nationally set contribution targets and moving towards achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner.Â
Carbon capture and storage technology play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions from emission-generating activities.
Moreover, Indonesia has significant potential as a carbon storage region and can potentially become a capturing location at both national and regional levels, thereby enhancing investment attractiveness and creating economic value from the carbon capture, transportation, and storage business processes.
Furthermore, to provide a legal foundation and certainty for all parties involved in emission reduction activities, regulations on the implementation of carbon capture and storage activities are deemed necessary.
"The considerations as referred to in points a, b, and c, it is necessary to establish a Presidential Regulation regarding the Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage Activities," reads consideration point d quoted on Thursday.Â
Meanwhile, Chapter I outlines general provisions where Article 1 paragraph 1 states that the working area is a specific area within the legal jurisdiction of Indonesian mining.Â
As for paragraph 3, it regulates the carbon storage permit area as a specific area within the Indonesian territory for the implementation of carbon capture and storage.
