Gresik – A total of 5 people were killed in a deadly accident between a tour bus and a truck on the Pantura Highway in Bungah Subdistrict, Gresik Regency, East Java. Dozens of other people were injured.
The accident involved a bus, which was carrying a pilgrimage group from Pandaan, Pasuruan Regency. At that time, the bus was on its way back to Pasuruan, after making a pilgrimage to Sunan Bonang, Tuban.
Tita Puspita Agustina, Head of the Law Enforcement Unit of the Traffic Unit, Police Inspector One, explained that the accident occurred on Saturday at around 9.30 p.m. local time.
The incident began when the bus, traveling from north to south, veered too far to the right beyond the center line of the road. It is suspected that the bus driver was tired and sleepy, resulting in a lack of concentration.
"Due to lack of concentration, the bus took the right lane too much and violated the markings," Agustina said in a statement on Sunday.
At the same time, a truck was traveling from the opposite direction. As a result, a collision ensued between these two large vehicles. The hard impact caused the truck to be pushed backwards.
The condition of the bus body, especially the front, was badly damaged. Some of the seats in the front cabin were thrown out, as were some of the passengers. The head of the truck was also badly damaged.
Agustina revealed that three bus passengers died at the scene. Two others died after being treated. Thirty people were injured and are still being treated at the hospital.
An eyewitness named, Aditya revealed that the force of the collision caused a strong bruising sound. Residents rushed out to see what was happening and help the victims.
"There were also motorists who stopped to help," he said.
The five victims were; Anik (51), Auliyah Mahfiroh Rahmadani (17), Kasmini (63), Noman Alif Agustyahya (28), Utanta Ihza Mahendra (18).
