According to data from Gmarket, an e-commerce platform operator in South Korea, 43 percent of the total number of strollers sold on the platform during the first three quarters of 2023 were for human babies, while the remaining 57 percent were strollers designed for animals, mainly dogs and cats.

Obviously, the trend of baby stroller sales is much more indicative of a very significant year-on-year decline.

Meanwhile, the sales ratio of pet strollers continues to increase from 33 percent in 2021 to 36 percent in 2022 and 57 percent in 2023.

So the conclusion from the data is that there is an increasing trend of people preferring to have a pet rather than adding a new family member.

According to Statistics Korea, the total fertility rate will be 0.78 in 2022, the lowest in the world. The rate is expected to drop even further.

The national statistics organization said that the fertility rate is expected to be 0.72 this year and drop below 0.7 to 0.68 in 2024 before increasing again. The number of households with pets is increasing significantly.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs shows that more than 6 million households in South Korea owned pets last year, up from 3.6 million households in 2012.
