While the popularity of pure electric cars continues to rise, there is an interesting trend showing that sales of hybrid vehicles may surpass pure electric cars.

Kukuh Kumara, General Secretary of the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) revealed data on electric vehicle sales in 2023, which shows that hybrid cars will surpass pure electric cars.

"The figure increased 5 times compared to the previous year in 2022 which only sold 10,344 units or with a market share of 1%," Kumara said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, sales of electric cars (Battery Electric Vehicle/BEV) also experienced growth, but not as big as hybrid cars. The increase in hybrid car sales did not double in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Kumara stated that BEV sales in 2023 were recorded at 17,051 units or with a market share of 1.7%, while in 2022 10,327 units were sold or a market share of 1%.

"Electric car sales last year reached 17,000 units, up from 10,000 units in 2022," he informed.

Furthermore, Kumara said that there are some factors that makes Hybrid cars more favored than pure electric cars.

"Hybrid cars are more fuel efficient, and there is a choice of 7-seater variants. While electric cars have also increased, the choice is mostly small cars," Kumara explained.

As information, overall wholesale new car sales in Indonesia throughout 2023 reached 1,005,802 units.

This achievement fell four percent compared to the previous year which reached 1,048,040 units.
