Jakarta – The Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) revealed that transportation safety still needs more attention from the government.Â
Tory Damantoro, Chairman of MTI, said that safety covers all transportation such as land, sea, and air.Â
"In sea transportation, handling safety needs a new approach to harmonize the increase in transportation tariffs that operators continue to demand, with efforts to improve safety," Damantoro said at KCIC Halim Station, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.Â
MTI highlighted that there were 33 percent of shipping accidents. The accidents were dominated by Roll On-Roll Off (RoRo) vessels with the main cause of accidents being fires on board up to 53 percent.Â
This is caused by ships loaded with trucks. For land transportation, MTI encourages reform of the driver's license issuance and supervision system to address the high human factor as the main cause of accidents.Â
"MTI saw that the need for safe road construction through consistent implementation of PUPR Regulation 4/2023 on road function guidelines," Damantoro said.Â
Furthermore, MTI also highlighted safety in the railroad sector. One of the concerns is the need for a breakthrough in level crossing standards.Â
One of the things highlighted by MTI is improvement in terms of construction techniques, signaling operations or overall level crossing management.Â
