Jakarta – The Indonesian National Police (Polri) had successfully resolved hundreds of human trafficking cases throughout 2023, this was stated by the Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.Â
"In human trafficking cases, the National Police managed to resolve 290 cases in 2023, an increase of 339 percent compared to 2022, before we were appointed as the daily head of the task force," Prabowo said during the 2023 Year-End Release at the National Police Headquarters, Jalan Trunojoyo, South Jakarta on Wednesday.Â
According to Prabowo, the increase in case settlements was accompanied by an increase in the number of suspects.Â
In 2023, there were 1,361 suspects, this number is increasing than in 2022.Â
"We also continue to enforce the law against crimes that are of public concern, one is human trafficking," Prabowo stated.Â
In May 2023, 1,213 victims of human trafficking were found spread across 11 countries including Indonesia. Based on these findings, the National Police then cooperated with the Indonesian Embassy in Manila and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to repatriate 226 Indonesian victims.
"Seeing these findings, the government took quick steps to eradicate human trafficking. Then the President appointed the National Police as the leading sector where the Chief of Police was assigned as the Daily Chair of the Task Force and we formed the Police TPPO Task Force," Prabowo explained.Â
Furthermore, Prabowo said there were prominent cases that were successfully uncovered in 2023, namely the Saudi Arabian Human Trafficking network with 15 suspects and 35 victims, and the Thailand Human Trafficking network with 2 suspects and 26 victims.Â
