Jokowi, Norwegian PM Discuss Deforestation Reduction

Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Dubai. They discussed several issues, one was about deforestation.

On the sidelines of the World Climate Action Summit (WCAS) COP28 in Dubai, the two heads of state also discussed environmental cooperation between Indonesia and Norway

"President Jokowi emphasized Indonesia's commitment and real work because it has succeeded in reducing emissions through reducing deforestation and forest degradation which has been proven and recognized by the world," Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar said on Saturday.

In October last year, Norway has contributed US$56 million to Indonesia's deforestation reduction performance for the 2016/2017 period through BPDLH, Minister Bakar informed.

Minister Bakar revealed that at COP28, PM Store announced Norway's continued contribution of US$100 million for deforestation reduction performance for the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 periods. 

"Norway's contribution to Indonesia's performance in reducing deforestation will continue, especially for Indonesia's deforestation reduction performance that has already occurred, namely for the 2019/2020, 2020/2021, and 2021/2022 periods."

According to Minister Bakar, President Jokowi also discussed the European Union Law on Deforestation (EUDR). 

"President Jokowi asked Norway to provide a balance of information and justice," Minister Bakar remarked.

"Although not a member of the European Union (EU), but as an economic region in Europe, Norway can help provide a balance of information and justice. Norway can help provide a balance of information and justice for Indonesia by providing its views," Minister Bakar added. 

The minister also mentioned: "Especially regarding the EU deforestation regulation which is discriminatory and has a huge impact on millions of small farmers." 

In addition, President Jokowi and PM Store also discussed investment cooperation between the two countries. It is hoped that Norway can realize the JETP commitment as soon as possible and increase investment in the development of the National Capital as a forest-based smart city.
