Jakarta – Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), Perry Warjiyo, revealed that Indonesia has just signed a memorandum of understanding or MoU Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"This sign that Indonesians can shop in the UAE only with QRIS," Warjiyo said at the Indonesia Together with the People (BIRAMA) 2023 event at the Bank Indonesia Office, Jakarta.
For the implementation of QRIS in Saudi Arabia, Warjiyo said that currently his party is still exploring.
"Currently, we are still exploring because there are umrah, hajj, and BI Fast expansion," Warjiyo remarked.
Furthermore, Warjiyo stated that Bank Indonesia is currently exploring the use of QRIS for other countries such as China and India.
"We are talking to Japan, can talk to China, and one more India," he further explained.
Meanwhile, Head of the BI Communication Department, Erwin Haryono, said that his party actually first targeted to implement QRIS in Saudi Arabia. Because, QRIS can be used by people who are doing Umrah and Hajj.
"At first, we wanted to explore Saudi Arabia because it was for Hajj and Umrah. But the system there is not ready. Finally, the UAE was chosen first because it was ready first and there were many Indonesian workers there," he concluded.
