KPU Involves Civil Society as Panelist Team for Presidential Debate

Jakarta – The Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU RI) is still planning to hold a presidential and vice presidential candidate debate in the 2024 Presidential Election.
The presidential debate will be held five times during the campaign period.
The Chairman of KPU RI, Hasyim Asy'ari, said that his party plans to involve civil society to be part of the panelist team in the presidential election debate.
"Yes (civil society is involved), in the panelist team there will be various kinds. There are government experts, some from the campus, some from fellow researchers, and also social activists related to the topic (of the presidential debate)," Asy'ari said on Monday.
However, Asy'ari remarked that none of the figures had been appointed to the 2024 presidential election debate panelist team.
He only emphasized that the 2024 presidential election debate would have a new format compared to the presidential and vice presidential debates in previous years.
"Later (we) will invite the inspiration of the candidates to debate rationally and healthily, we also prepare topics that become debate material," Asy'ari remarked.
Furthermore, he stated that his party would hold a meeting with the winning teams of each presidential and vice presidential candidate if the preparations for the 2024 presidential election debate were ripe.
"Approximately discussing the debate method, about the topic or debate material and then discussing, if the topic is for example then the right panelists, who are the right ones, who we consider experts who can be accepted by all parties," he continued.
Asy'ari said that the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) will discuss the 2024 presidential election debate mechanism no later than November 29, 2023.
"Insya Allah, on the 29th there will be an overview of this," he informed.
