Monkeypox Cases in Jakarta Reach 57: All Male Patients

Jakarta – The Health Ministry revealed that as of November 22, 2023, there were 57 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 33 of them were cured.

Director of Health Quarantine Surveillance at the Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Ministry of Health, dr Achmad Farchanny Tri Adryanto, explained that the spread of this one disease continues to grow even though good news also comes together.

"As of yesterday, November 22, there were 57 confirmed cases of monkeypox," Adryanto said in an online press conference on Thursday.

In August 2023, 1 new case of monkeypox was found, followed by 56 other cases since October 2023. So far, the DKI Jakarta area has the highest number of patients, namely 42 patients. 

Then, Banten has 6 confirmed cases and West Java has 6 cases. There is also East Java with 2 cases and Riau Islands with 1 case of monkeypox. 

Adryanto informed: "Total 57 confirmed cases of monkeypox, 33 patients have been declared cured," 

The treatment status of the 57 patients, 7 of them are undergoing isolation at the hospital and 14 are undergoing independent isolation under the supervision of the local health office.

"Then there was 1 case that was hospitalized and died. The remaining 33 cases recovered,"

Furthermore, there are 8 people whose status is currently still suspected, they have undergone laboratory tests but the results have not been obtained.

In addition, 191 people have also done laboratory tests and the results are negative.

Of all the confirmed cases of monkeypox, Adryanto remarked all of them consist of men, "Of all the confirmed cases to date, the patient's gender is 100 percent male. So we have not received any reports of female cases,"

The trigger for the spread of monkeypox is mostly caused by same-sex (male to male) sex. 

The Ministry of Health found that 35 cases of monkeypox have been found in the same-sex community alone. There are also bisexual and heterosexual orientations that follow. 

"Of the total 57 confirmed cases, the sexual orientation of most patients is MSM (men who have sex with men). There are 35 cases in the MSM community," Adryanto said. 

Then, bisexual orientation there are 11 cases, heterosexual orientation there are seven cases, he continued.
