Papua – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Thursday inaugurated the Modern Fishers' in Samber and Binyeri villages, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua Province.
The Head of State conveyed the importance of technical and management assistance for fishers in utilizing the facilities built in the Modern Fishers’ Village.
“Prepare for good management and ensure that the fishers can make the best use of this very good location so we won’t fail again. It should be well maintained," the President said on Thursday.
The President continued that there were several similar projects with complete and good supporting facilities that could not operate sustainably due to poor governance.
“A great deal of cold storage facilities in the past must have been forced to stop running as they could not pay for electricity,” the President said.
To that end, President Widodo remarked that the facilities in the Modern Fishers’ Village in Samber and Binyeri villages should be well-managed and integrated.
“The management must be thorough, integrated, sustainable, and not half-hearted. It's not over with the [completion of] facilities, but once again, assistance, governance, the management assistance is very much needed,” the Head of State said.
Moreover, President Widodo added that the Modern Fishers’ Village was built in an integrated manner and has complete facilities, such as cold storage, ice factory, and workshop for fishers.
The President also called on everyone to properly maintain the facilities.
“It is easier to build, but we usually fail in the maintenance,” the President said, adding that the village’s fishers’ products needed to be encouraged to enter downstream.
“We hope that in this fisher’s village, they can enter the national supply chain and the global supply chain so what we build really can bring benefits,” he concluded.
