Congo – At least 31 people were killed and 147 injured in a raid during a recruitment drive in the Republic of Congo's capital, Brazzaville, according to the government.
"A tragedy occurred at Stade Ornano on the evening of Monday, November 20 to Tuesday, November 21, 2023," said Communications Minister Thierry Moungalla.
Local media reported that the tragedy was caused by jostling during the recruitment process. Moungalla stated that an emergency unit has been set up under the authority of the Prime Minister.
The government decided to declare a national mourning period on Wednesday and temporarily halt army recruitment in Brazzaville. Meanwhile, recruitment in other regions will continue.
"An investigation has begun, a joint police and military investigation has also been launched to determine the cause of the incident and the results will be announced in the coming days," Moungalla said.
