Jokowi Discusses MIKTA's Efforts to Support Palestinian Peace

Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Monday warmly welcomed several delegated of the 9th MIKTA – Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkiye, and Australia – Speakers' Consultation at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pahala Mansury said that the meeting has discussed MIKTA's efforts to stop violence in Gaza and support Palestinian peace. 

"One of our current main agendas is to reform various multilateral organizations in order to increase the effectiveness of multilateral organizations in terms of maintaining world peace," Mansury stated in a statement after the meeting on Monday.

In addition, Mansury stated that during the meeting, President Jokowi also stressed that they must ensure that the humanitarian aid can enter Gaza and be properly received by the people of Gaza.

“Then, the third one is to stop the war there or ceasefire,” he added.

The meeting also discussed MIKTA’s efforts to initiate a political process to find a long-term solution for Palestine in obtaining its rights as an independent state.

Besides discussing the conditions in Palestine, the meeting discussed economic cooperation as well. Pahala said that as an organization consisting of various middle power countries, MIKTA is deemed to have considerable economic power.

“It is how we can build better cooperation, especially those more inclusive while we also observe the supports for Global South countries to be able to build industries by developing the downstream (sector) of their economic strengths,” he said.

On climate change, the Head of State also discussed MIKTA’s concrete efforts to push for a more equitable energy transition and help the Global South countries to develop new and renewable energy.

In a separate statement, Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani said that the 9th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation meeting will discuss parliamentary support for policies carried out by the governments of each MIKTA country.
