The World Seems Unable to Stop Israel-Palestine War, Jokowi Says
- Setpres
Riyadh – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to use all its influence peacefully to be at the forefront of resolving the crisis in Gaza, Palestine.
"The OIC summit must result in significant things to overcome the war between Israel and Palestine," President Jokowi said at the LB OIC Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
According to the Head of State, the war between Israel and Palestine has been going on for a month. The world seems unable to stop this deadly war.
"One month has been a deadly war. The world seems helpless, more than 7.9 billion people of the world, more than 190 state leaders cannot stop this war," the President remarked.
On that occasion, President Widodo delivered four concrete proposals when speaking before the leaders of Islamic countries.
First, President Jokowi urged for an immediate ceasefire.
"Without a ceasefire, the situation will not improve. Israel has used the narrative of 'self-defense' and continues to kill civilians. This is nothing but collective punishment. We must all find a way for Israel to immediately implement a ceasefire," President Widodo stated.
Second, President Jokowi encouraged humanitarian assistance to be accelerated and expanded. The OIC must propose a more predictable and sustainable aid mechanism considering the humanitarian situation in Gaza is very alarming.
"The humanitarian situation there is very concerning. For example, the Indonesian hospital in North Gaza, which continues to be targeted by Israeli attacks, has run out of fuel since yesterday. Indonesia asks all parties to respect international humanitarian law,"
Third, President Jokowi asked the OIC to use all channels to hold Israel accountable for the humanitarian cruelty committed.
For example, urging access for the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories established by the UN Human Rights Council to carry out its mandate.
"And continue to support the advisory opinion process at the International Court of Justice,"
Fourth, the OIC must urge peace talks to restart immediately for the realization of a two-state solution and reject the idea of a one-state solution. According to the Head of State, a one-state solution will only sacrifice Palestine.
"If indeed the quartet mechanism cannot be relied upon, then the OIC must encourage the peace negotiation process with a new format, and Indonesia is ready to contribute to the peace negotiations," the President concluded.
