EV Becomes Main Topic of ASEAN Transportation Leaders Meeting

Laos – The Indonesian Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi attended the ASEAN transportation leaders meeting in Luang Prabang, Laos on November 9-10, 2023.
The meeting has agreed on ASEAN's commitment to prioritize sustainable transportation development like electric vehicle to address environmental issues such as climate change and global warming.
"We talked a lot about energy transition, electric vehicle ecosystem, digitalization, and sustainability. These are actual topics that become the rationale in building connectivity," the Minister said in a statement on Thursday.
Minister Sumadi attended several meetings during his two-day visit to Laos, including the 55th ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting and Related Meetings (STOM), as well as the 29th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting and Related Meetings (ATM).
The meetings were attended by transportation ministers and senior transportation officials of ASEAN member countries and delegations from ASEAN Dialogue Partners, namely China, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union.
Minister Sumadi expressed his gratitude for the support from all ASEAN member countries who have agreed to improve the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, such as electric vehicle charging stations in ASEAN.
"Sustainable transportation is one of the priority economic deliverables of the transportation sector in the ASEAN Partnership 2023,"
The Minister revealed that ASEAN countries as the epicenter of growth have the same spirit to strengthen regional connectivity in the ASEAN region and with the international community.
"Countries in ASEAN are very compact to continue to improve connectivity both on land, sea, and air. We discussed in detail with ASEAN countries and Dialogue Partners, namely Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, and the European Union on matters that have been jointly initiated and future program initiatives," Minister Sumadi explained.
The Minister further explained that Indonesia consistently continues to actively participate in ASEAN-level meetings to voice and initiate various programs, including in the transportation sector.
"Insya Allah, the programs that have been initiated can be useful for advancing the ASEAN region,"
The meeting also agreed on several policies in the air, land, sea, and railway transportation sectors, including the discussion and ratification of the ASEAN Air Navigation Service Masterplan 3rd Edition, the ASEAN sustainable aviation action plan, guidelines on smart ports and strengthening recommendations to prepare for a crisis related to port terminal operations and crew exchange and repatriation in the future.
