Jakarta – Spicy food refers to dishes that contain ingredients like chili peppers or other spices. Spicy food is known for its ability to create a sensation of hot and may include a variety of flavors and ingredients beyond just spiciness, often adding depth and complexity to the taste. 

However, spicy foods aren't for everyone. And if you're eating too much hot chili, you could be damaging your body as well. So, read below for some of the dangerous risks of eating spicy food. 

1. They can cause acne and eczema

Spicy foods may cause people to break out. When spicy food creates inflammation in the gut – from an upset stomach, acid reflux, or other symptoms – sometimes this inflammation can also be seen on the skin with flushing, acne breakout, or even eczema. 

If a particular food might be the culprit, dermatologists may suggest a person keep a food diary to pinpoint the offender.

2. Spicy food can affect your voice 

According to the health experts at The Mayo Clinic, eating too many spicy foods is one of the things that can irritate your throat. 

If you're someone who suffers from acid reflux – something commonly brought on by the consumption of spicy foods - it can lead to not only vomiting but also to soreness, swelling, and "a horse, muffled voice."

3. Gastrointestinal distress

Overconsumption of spicy foods can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to issues like gastritis, acid reflux, or stomach ulcers. It can cause a burning sensation and discomfort in the stomach and esophagus.

4. Sleep disturbances

Some people may experience sleep disturbances or insomnia after consuming extremely spicy foods due to discomfort or heartburn.

5. Dependence on spicy food

Some people can develop a dependency on spicy foods. They find it difficult to enjoy non-spicy foods because they are used to high levels of spiciness.

6. Increased risk of stomach diseases

Studies have shown that excessive consumption of spicy foods may increase the risk of certain diseases, such as stomach ulcers. While this relationship still needs to be further researched, it's a good idea to consume spicy foods wisely.

7. Nutritional disadvantage

Spicy foods often contain excess fat and salt, and in some cases, are nutritionally imbalanced. Excessive consumption of spicy foods that are low in nutrients can have adverse effects on long-term health.

8. Acid Reflux

For some people, the dangers of eating spicy food can trigger acid reflux, a condition in which there is a backflow of stomach contents into the esophagus. This condition causes a burning sensation in the esophagus.
