Jakarta – The unusual phenomenon of a day without shadow or known as Culmination will happen in the city of Jakarta. This is a phenomenon where the Sun is directly overhead at noon.
"At that time, the angle of incidence of the Sun's rays will be perpendicular to the Earth's surface, so the energy of Sun's rays will be focused in a narrow area," BMKG stated in an official statement on Monday.
Moreover, Jakarta city will experience this shadowless day phenomenon on Today, October 9, 2023.
According to the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) stated that shadowless day in Jakarta will occur at 11:40 a.m. local time.
Bogor City is also known to experience a similar phenomenon, culmination after Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 10 at 11:39 a.m. local time.
At that time, the shadow of a standing object disappears because it intersects with the object itself. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), this will cause an increase in air temperature outside normal conditions.
In a year, there are two shadowless days in Indonesia, which are during major culmination. A major culmination is an event when the sun's declination is equal to the latitude of the observer.
In addition, Jakarta and its surroundings will also be in an area that has the potential to experience meteorological drought because it is influenced by the peaking El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomena.
How to observe a shadowless day
The easiest way for people to observe a shadowless day is to use a vertical object such as a stick, marker, or other object that can be placed standing up.
Place the object on a flat surface and watch at a predetermined time to check if shadows are completely invisible.
