The Indonesian Export to China Dominated by Iron, Steel

Jakarta – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed that Indonesia's export to China is now dominated by iron and steel in line with the downstream program encouraged by the Government.
The Acting Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti revealed that in the years before the downstreaming policy, the dominance of Indonesian export to China was mineral fuel with HS 27 code.
"The HS 27 mineral fuel commodity, which in previous years dominated Indonesia's exports to China, began to be replaced by HS 72 iron and steel export commodities, especially in the last two years," Widyasanti said in a press conference on Friday.

Based on the data, Indonesia's iron and steel exports to China in 2023 the export share was 28.58 percent. Then mineral fuels by 26 percent, animal oil or soap 9.27 percent, nickel and goods from nickel 8.22 percent, and pulp and wood 4.60 percent.
"This is in line with the downstream policy and the construction of nickel ore processing smelters from 2022 to August 2023," She said.
Nickel commodities and goods thereof of HS 75 class are included in the top five commodities exported to China, she continued.
Widyasanti explained, in 2023 the proportion of exports of slag and ash metal ores will no longer be included in the top five export contributions of Indonesia to China.
"For the United States (US) market, there are commodities that consistently enter the top five non-oil and gas exports. They are apparel and accessories HS 61, and non-knitted HS 62,"
She also mentioned: "Looking from the proportion of the top five, the structure of Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports to the US has also changed its composition. In the period 2022 to August 2023, electrical machinery and equipment and parts, HS 85, entered the top five major non-oil and gas commodities exported by Indonesia to the US market,"
