This incident was caused by two large wine tanks at the Levira distillery in Sao Lourence do Bairro, Anadia exploding.

The video also shows the red liquid rushing down a steep hill in the small town of Sao Lourenco do Bairro, home to 2,000 residents.

The Officials sprang into action to try to stop the wine, before it could literally turn the Certima River into wine.

After that, the Anadia Fire Department blocked off the flood and diverted it away from the river, where it ran instead into a nearby field, local media reported. The firefighters then said a basement in a home near the distillery was flooded with the wine.

Levira Distillery has since apologized for the incident and said it dredged up the wine-soaked land, "We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately,” it said in a statement.

"We are committed to resoving this situation as quickly as possible,"

Notably, wine consumption in Portugal is expected to fall by 34% compared to 2022, the commission said. Declines in wine consumption are also projected in Germany (down 22%), France (15%), Spain (10%), and Italy (7%).

The European wine crisis comes after 2022 marked an all-time high for global wine exports, according to the International Wine and Grape Organization. The drop in demand is not being offset by higher production, which the commission projects will increase by 4% over the course of this year for member countries.

Portugal and France are among the countries that have responded with subsidized programs to convert excess wine to other uses.
