It typically happens within the first few days to a couple of weeks postpartum and is characterized by feelings of sadness, mood swings, irritability, and sometimes tearfulness. These feelings are often accompanied by fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and changes in appetite.

Unfortunately in Indonesia, many people think that baby blues is caused by spiritual weakness. In response to this, dr. Ita Fajria Tamim from Nahdlatul Ulama explained that baby blues syndrome isn't related to the spiritual aspect of a person, but rather to hormonal changes after childbirth.

"Baby blues is not related to faith or spiritual context, because if we talk about faith, it is spirituality, while baby blues is related to mentality," explained dr. Ita, as quoted from NU Online, on Thursday.

According to her, the causes of women experiencing baby blues syndrome are very diverse, ranging from hormonal changes, physical fatigue, and adaptation to a new role as a mother.

Hormonal changes can affect the mother's mood. Hormonal instability is exacerbated by adaptations to sleep patterns and lifestyle changes when having a new baby.

"So, the psychological condition of new mothers is very vulnerable," said dr. Ita, caregiver of Nazhatut Thullab Islamic Boarding School.

According to her, these symptoms usually appear in the early days after giving birth and last for 10 to 14 days. If it lasts more than two weeks, a consultation with a doctor is highly recommended.

She emphasizes that every woman is at risk of experiencing baby blues syndrome. What a new mother needs is support and appreciation. Avoid criticizing her choices and try to understand her feelings.

"Husbands should be a support system for new wives. The goal is to reduce baby blues and depression. The spouse must be able to understand the emotions felt by the mother giving birth, ranging from sadness, fatigue, and fatigue when sleep deprived," she explained.
