ASEAN-Canada Build Strategic Partnership and Strengthen Food Security

Jakarta – The Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that the meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Canada on Wednesday resulted in two cooperation agreements.
"The ASEAN and Canada meeting resulted in two cooperation agreements. First, ASEAN-Canada officially established the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership through the ratification of the Joint Leaders' Statement on ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership," Minister Marsudi said at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Second, the Minister said the meeting also adopted the document "Joint ASEAN-Canada Leaders' Statement on Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in the Face of Crisis".
"So, there are two ASEAN-Canada (agreements). First, the establishment of the ASEAN-Canada strategic partnership, second cooperation in the context of strengthening food security,"
In addition, the Minister said that during the meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau conveyed an increase in the percentage of trade between ASEAN and Canada.
"PM Trudeau said that trade between ASEAN and Canada, with the intensification of relations between ASEAN and Canada, showed an increase of 29 percent," she remarked.
Furthermore, during the meeting, the ASEAN-Canada leaders hoped that ASEAN-Canada cooperation could overcome various challenges.
"The leaders expressed hope that ASEAN-Canada cooperation can strengthen regional peace and stability, this was again emphasized. Then, overcome various challenges, especially related to food, energy, and climate change," the Minister explained.
