Manchester United Officially Part Ways with Mason Greenwood

Manchester – Manchester United and Mason Greenwood have reached a mutual agreement to part ways after Greenwood faced violent charges, the club announced on Monday.

Greenwood has been suspended by Manchester United since January 2022, over allegations of abuse after photos and videos relating to it were posted online.

In February, prosecutors said they had dropped charges, including rape and sexual assault allegations against Greenwood after a key witness recanted his testimony and new evidence emerged.

Then on Monday, Manchester United remarked that after a six-month internal investigation into Greenwood, the club decided to release the player so he could rebuild his career elsewhere.

"All involved, including Mason, understand the difficulties faced in continuing his career at Manchester United," read a statement on Manchester United's official website.

"It was therefore mutually agreed that the right thing for him was to leave Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome," the club added. 

On the other hand, Greenwood still maintains his stance that he’s innocent. However, he can understand the decisions taken by the club.

"However, I fully accept that I made a mistake in my relationship, and I take responsibility for the situation triggered by posts on social media," 

He also said: "The best decision for all of us, is that I continue my football career outside Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club,"

United's chief executive Richard Arnold, who has been criticized for planning Greenwood's return to the first-team squad, wrote an open letter to Manchester United fans. 

In his letter, Arnold said that he is fully aware of Greenwood's difficulties in rebuilding his career, as he and his partner are raising their baby, amidst the intense scrutiny at United.

However, Arnold said that the club will continue to support those who are allegedly victimized by the player.

"The club will continue to offer its support to the victims and Mason to help them rebuild and continue their lives positively," he remarked.
